Family 4 Auxiliary outboard – 5, 8 or 10hp?

15:09 Thu 18th Aug 2011

Hi,
Anyone out there got a 5, 8 or 10hp Honda four stroke (or similar) auxiliary outboard fitted to a Shetland Family Four and if so how they perform?

I am thinking of buying an auxiliary outboard for my 2008 Family Four. I would like to know what HP outboard will comfortable push the boat along at 6mph on the river without running at full throttle all the time?

I plan to use an auxiliary for Norfolk Broads, river, sea loch or estuaries where there is little to no current and a 60hp main outboard for use at sea and more challenging conditions.

If the auxiliary outboard is mounted to one side of the main outboard do I need a short or long shaft?

Thanks all!
Terry.

Hi,
I have just fitted a yam 4hp to my 1990 family four. It was bought purely on reccomendation by my marine engineer at Burryport. I have not yet used it but am assured it will get me home when and if required. It sits alongside the main yam 90 and is longshaft
Hope this helps. Mike
